How the tool works

  1. Each seed becomes a set of queries

The tool asks Google about each seed as you typed it, then about every expansion you ticked. Letters and digits go after the seed. Question words and modifiers wrap around it. “Words before” puts the cursor in front of it.

  2. Your browser asks Google directly

Every request goes from your browser to Google’s public autocomplete service. There is no server of ours in between. The tool keeps to 3 requests at a time with a pause after each one. If Google starts refusing, it slows down and then stops, so you can continue a few minutes later.

  3. New suggestions become new queries

Each suggestion that comes back is cleaned up and checked against what the tool already has. New ones join the table and, up to the depth you set, get asked about in turn. “Found via” shows the query that produced a suggestion and “Level” shows how many steps it sits from your seed.

What it’s for and what it won’t tell you

Good for

  • Long-tail keyword ideas

Find the longer, more specific phrases people type about a topic before you outline a page or a post.

  • Questions worth answering

Tick “Question words”, then filter to “Questions only” to collect the questions a page or an FAQ should answer.

  • Negative keywords

Scan the CSV for phrases your search ads should not match, such as free, jobs or repair, before you add them to a campaign.

  • Markets side by side

Run the same seed with another language or country and compare how the phrasing changes.

Want the same view of your own site? Our Long-tail Queries data model shows which long and question-shaped queries already earn your site impressions in Search Console.

Not built for

  • Search volume

Autocomplete returns phrases, not numbers. Nothing here measures search volume, trends over time, ranking difficulty or cost per click.

  • What your own search box shows

Google tailors suggestions to location, language, time and personal history, so google.com can show you something different from this table.

  • A guaranteed service

Google publishes no documentation for this service and can slow down, change or close it at any time. If it stops answering, the tool says so and keeps what it found.

  • Unlimited runs

One run stops at 2,000 suggestions and a depth of 3. Google may also pause a connection that asks too fast.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers about the data, the limits and your privacy.

No. Autocomplete shows phrases Google predicts from what people type, and a phrase can appear there without being searched often. Use the list to find phrasings, then check their volume in a keyword planner or in your own Search Console data.
